This Roman Colosseum map provides an outline of the building as we see it today. Key features are shown, highlighting it’s use and primary features.
The architecture of the Colosseum was based on the ancient Roman skills with arches and the savvy use of the qualities of different building materials. Three orders of Roman columns provide a visual rhythm to the facade though their function was principally aesthetic.
The dungeons, underground cellars and galleries of the Roman Colosseum are now visible but would once have been hidden under a wooden floor to the arena. A separate map would be required for these – it is know that they also include a secret tunnel used by the Emperor for his personal safety. These were constructed at the time of Emperor Domitian. Prior to this modification the Colosseum could also be flooded and used to stage naval battles.
