Representation of Rome’s Tiber river as a deity, holding an oar and cornucopia. The She wolf and twin founders of Rome Romulus and Remus, are sheltered by the river god. The Tiber river together with its local geography of hills was quickly recognised as a defining strategic element which underpinned Rome’s economic, military and naval strength as ancient Roman ships freely navigated their way to port.
Access to the River also meant access to inland trade and supplies, such as timber which was an essential element of construction.
