A view of the Colosseum’s internal structure, with a combination of clay brickwork, Tufa or Tuff volcanic stone blocks and Travertine marble.
Wooden beams and metal structures were embedded into the stone as part of the various mechanisms under the arena to create cages, lifts and entry/exit points for scenery, animals and gladiatorial participants.
A sense of what the floor level might have looked like can be had from the Amphitheatre at Capua in southern Italy.
