Although largely hidden to our eyes, one of the greatest Roman achievements was that of water supply (aqueducts), sewers and sanitation. During Emperor Vespasian's rein they even went as far as setting up public latrines and setting urine taxes (urine was very useful as a detergent!)
This picture shows what was probably a drainage or sanitary well in an ancient Roman shop. Note the fine stone work around the edge.
