The structure of the Roman army changed considerably over more than 1000 years. In the earliest periods of the Roman kingdom the infantry was the prominent element with only a small element of cavalry (aka equestrians). Later periods saw an increase of the cavalry but also of specialised units such as engineers and other ancillary capabilities.
A defining element of the Roman army with respect to its contemporaries was the high level of structure, equipment and training.
