The King is removed and mechanisms are put in place to minimise the risks of absolutist power falling into anyone's hands. Magistrates are elected for fixed periods of time (up to 5 years) and the position of greatest power is shared by 2 Consuls who have to consult with one another. In situations of extreme danger a single Dictator may be nominated by the Consuls to hold power for a maximum period of 6 months.
